Drillbit Taylor

This past weekend I ventured out to the Drive-in for the first drive-in weekend of the year where I got to see Iron Man for a second time and Drillbit Taylor. Drillbit is another gem of a Apatow production, it is pretty funny, though so of the highschool life of geeks is a little over done, being a geek myself I should know. Owen Wilson is very funny, just delivers line after line of comic gold that doesn't get old. Umm don't really know what else to say about it. If it is still playing in a theater near you, I would say go on out and see, it would at least be worth a matinee if not check it out when it comes out on dvd.

Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story

I decided to watch this movie with very low expectations going into it, and for the most part I was fairly dead on with how I thought it would be.  The movie isn't extremely terrible but its not great either, the saving grace of it all is the music.  The music is pretty friggin funny especially after he starts singing with Jenna Fisher.  The movie does have some fairly comical moments, my favorites being everytime they start using a new type of drug, just because it is so repeative that its funny but most of the rest of the comedy within the movie is just too over the top to really be funny unless you were like completely stoned out of your mind.

My Rating: 5/10

Oh and another high spot in the comedy is the various actors playing old musicians for example: Frankie Muniz as Buddy Holly, Jack White of the White Stripes as Elvis, Andy Hershman as Gerry Garcia, and as the Beetles Jack Black (Paul McCartney) Paul Rudd (John Lennon) Justin Long (George Harrison) Jason Shwartzman (Ringo Starr)

Iron Man

So I ventured out last night with some friends in Boston to catch the first big summer blockbuster of the year "Iron Man" and I gotta say I was extremely impressed.  Being a fairly big comic nerd I usually see every comic movie that comes out, and I most always have some sort of complaint with them, especially the Marvel films but not this time.  I would have to say that this is probably the best Marvel movie to date which is saying something with me because I have a love affair with the first major Marvel release series "Blade" though the series that Spike made was terrible, it kind of ruined the series for me.  Back to Iron Man, the movie was very well made, there are next to no dead spots through the movie and the digital effects are amazing.  When I first heard this movie was being made and that Robert Downey Jr was going to be playing Stark i was very skeptical but he hit the personality of the character dead on.  So if you haven't already flocked out to see it, go shell out 10.50 or however much it costs where ever you live and definitely go see this movie, you won't be disappointed.

My Rating: Pefect 10/10

Night of the Living Dead (1990)

NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD

This is the 1990 remake of the George A. Romero cult zombie classic.  I would have to say that this is one of the best horror movie remakes ever as far as accuracy with the original goes.   There are plenty of other remakes that are amazing but when you put them up side by side with the originals there are major differences usually for the better though.  With this remake they pretty much used they exact same script of the original film, with a few minor tweaks of course, and made it so much better with modern technology to make the zombies more realistic and gruesome, which is always a good thing.  There is not very much star power in the movie but there are a couple familar faces, mostly becoming more well known in later years after this film.   One of the main characters is played by actor Tony Todd who made a name for himself in the world of horror movies as the hook handed Candyman, and very briefly at the beginning of the movie we see Bill Moseley playing the character Barbara's brother Johnny.  Some of you may know Moseley from his role in Rob Zombie's films House of 1000 Corpses and the Devil's Rejects as the character Otis.  All in all i would rate this movie as a very grade A horror flick, and definitely a must watch for and horror fan especially if you are a Romero or just a plan fan of zombie movies.

My Personal Rating: 9/10

A very well made movie for its time and genre, though there are a few small errors in the special effects where you can tell its fake.  The most dominant display of this is near the beginning when Barbara is being attacked in her car at the grave yard, one of the zombies has the autopsy Y cut and you can tell he is wearing a rubber shirt.  That is pretty much my only gripe with the entire movie.

Over the Top

Well I've recently been getting side tracked getting this blog up and running but I figure I might as well just go ahead and start posting stuff on my own without the help of my team of friends.  So without further delay I bring you the first review of the DVD release of,

OVER THE TOP

*Warning Plot Spoilers....if you are actually wanting to watch this movie and still be "suprised" skip ahead*

Well if you haven't figured it out yet this is a classic 80's Stallone movie.  Basic plot layout is, Stallone is a truck driver and a father, though he walked out on his family 10 years ago leaving his wife and 2 year old son in the care of his wife's rich father, who of course hates Stallone and tries to brainwash the child after Stallone comes back into the boys life after his mother dies during a heart operation.  While traveling around on the road with his son, Stallone reveals that he is a very successful arm wrestler and likes to hustle people for money during his travels.  Later on he enters the International Arm Wrestling Championships in Las Vegas and sells his truck to be able to put down money on himself in hopes of winning enough money to win back his son and prove that he can provide for him.  He of course wins the tournament and wins back his son from the evil grandfather and starts his new life with his son.

All in all its not an entirely awful movie though it does have a lot of 80's cheese.  The story is halfway believable to a point aside from the rich grandfather which is just a little too much, he is borderline mafia (he has henchmen, and if you are a fan of prowrestling you will recognize one of them as the Funker, Terry Funk).  A lot of the opposing arm wrestlers are a little over the top as well, the ham it up a little too much but I do like how during the final stages of competition they try to play it off as somewhat of a documentary, doing interviews with the different competitors including Stallone.  Some of the interviews are a little funny just because it makes some of the muscle bound morons seem halfway sophisticated.  The character Grizzly is probably the most over the top with some of his psych-outs which include eating a cigar and drinking motor oil.  This movie is a fairly decent 80's guy movie worth at least one watch, though it ends on a very rocky like note.

Personal rating: 6.5/10
